For the first time this year the new registration figures from the MCIA have seen the first negative number when comparing to 2018. It was only a reduction of 61 units (-0.6%), so no panic buttons being hit yet. Being a popular type, Adventure Sport, which has the largest growth in the year so far and has been over several year now has reduced very slightly for the month being reviewed (May). Perhaps nothing to drastic should be read into this as a leap in new models, a leap in updated models were eventually going to have consequences. Long term which we are interested with in the product, the numbers will even themselves out, but remember that today’s new models are tomorrows used machines and in the past large numbers of the same model returned at the same time can temporarily distress the supply/demand ratio, reducing values in the short term. This though is usually short term over a few months. This time of year is proving that the weather effect on the used market has yet again shown the excess of water does have an adverse consequence on sales, with reports from the trade that it is very “hit and miss”. Long term the predictions don’t rest on climate, but more the economic situation and the Brexit effect is the main topic of conversation. Stock management becoming more important as the sands of time inevitability fall to the imminent slowdown of autumn. That said there is as yet no negative opinion to the reported current used prices at the moment and no talk as yet of adjustments down, just some care in not paying too much. This is again relevant to the current year and at times of a longer “season” there will be some years where prices hold higher for longer, but this is usually a few percent for a month or so. With there still being no clear indicators of long term fallout, the prices in this month are continuing to be formulated on the assumption the trade will continue in a similar vein to what is currently doing. Reported prices this month have changed little in general, but as we move into the end of season, expect some in the next few months.
