So the latest figures available from the MCIA (June) see the total number of registrations up by 7.8% and the year to date (Y-T-D) is also in a small positive at 2%. A weather affected slow start to the riding season, or more a stall, the weather has started to play ball and things are selling. The confidence is still there at the moment and the willingness to continue to pay “summer” prices. So with the exception of normal housekeeping on a very few models, dealer sentiment coupled with the other forms of research we carry out have led to overall stability with this month’s used price product Green Book. This said in the past the weather has had adverse effects on prices at the start of the slower trade buying season. In looking forward assumptions have been made to go with a “normal” pattern and a small 1% general drop has been applied to this month’s Monitor product. The bigger BCA Peterborough sale in this last research period contained a large entry from Black Horse, which as usual saw virtually all of them sell. Noticeable in this and the recent sales containing the finance providers entries is the number of lots around the three year old range. Some PCP handbacks not taken back in part exchange or sold privately can be a good indicator to the saturation of that particular model in the market. If the model was new at the time there can be a case where all the initial rush for the new model causes a glut and a spike in supply after a couple of years. After the initial end of term increase, there is than a period where the price settles to the real market level. Black Horse auction prices realised are this month at 102% of CAP current values, on which decisions are made for the Monitor values. One point where the waters are very muddy is the recent announcement that the Japan-Europe Free Trade Agreement (JEFTA), signed on 17 July by European Commission and Japanese government representatives. This will mean an end to the EU common external customs tariff of 6% on motorcycles imported from Japan once it is ratified and fully implemented over the next five years. Not just cheaper Japanese bikes for the EU but it also includes provision for harmonisation of technical safety (lights, brakes, etc) and emissions standards, saving EU based manufacturers making two different spec bikes for the two markets. The kicker here is JEFTA reciprocity will not apply to the UK, because we will have left the EU by that time. JEFTA took more than a decade to sort, so could prove difficult to replicate in a short period of time for UK manufacturers. It will take a long time for any clarification on the effects of this, but Brexit hurdles are the first hurdle to overcome, with little ideas yet to how it will, or if it will change prices either long or short term.
