Talk around the trade is again of a mixed time that has been the “norm” for the last few months. Again the mention of politics and the uncertainty that surrounds it has been suggested as the cause. It is though that time of year when current used values start to change, but that change over different years, has different causes, be it weather or any number of other reasons. What inevitably happens when things slow are things to try and stir up some extra business and recently there has been a proliferation of manufacturer schemes and extensions to current ones offered in an attempt to stem the tide of reducing new registrations. This does of course have some effect on current used prices, but in this product we are of course looking at the long term predictions, so short term price changes in the future are impossible to predict. Therefore we are more concerned with trends rather than short term changes and at this moment there is little indication that prices are moving in either direction. That said the latest available MCIA statistics (for June) were suggesting economic uncertainties are really starting to undermine consumer confidence in our industry after the second monthly drop. The total number of powered two-wheelers registered at the half way point of the year, that could be considered still in high season was 11,643, a reduction of 11%, although the total for the year to date were 59,784 and is still above the 2018 total for the same period of 57,784 (or 2.9% up). One thing worth a mention again is of success of a particular brand or model and the consequent effect on used price. This is mentioned as currently success from three years ago by Triumph and particularly the popularity of Thruxton 1200R exceeding all expectations, has led to a glut back into the market. This does have a resultant supply/demand change and can flood the dealers with too many of the same model resulting in hand backs and reducing prices. This particular instance (as with others) has been addressed in our current prices publication and a small adjustment in this product. What has happened in the past is a launch of a model is followed by a spike in registrations and selling all at once usually results in them all coming back at once, particularly on a fixed term finance product like PCP and temporarily stresses the used market. We are seeing this at the moment, but as time moves on into a model life, the new purchases start to spread out and so does the termination of the contract. This gives the trade a drip feed rather than a cascade of used stock that tends to be more manageable and has less detrimental effect on used values. In cases like this the future predictions are not as severely changed as the current prices.
