Sales of new alternatively fuelled vehicles lept up 41.0% in September, while demand for petrol fell -1.2% and diesel dropped -21.7%.

Automotive data experts hpi have crunched the numbers to come up with the best picks when considering a hybrid vehicle.

The luxury Porsche Panamera hybrid retains over 81% of its value after three years and 30,000 miles. For a family car, the Volvo XC90 retains over 70% of its value after three years. The Kia Optima hybrid retains 56.1% of its value.

Commenting on the study, James Dower senior editor from hpi said: “Hybrid vehicles have jumped in popularity and provide a great mix of economy and green credentials. The choice of models available to consumers continues to expand and provide credible options in all segments, from small cars to large SUVs.”

The automotive data experts report certain types of car have seen values rise in recent months as motorists look for economical options prices rose by 4.1%, Toyota Aygo (09-14), Toyota Aygo (14- ), Hyundai i10 (14- ) and Peugeot 108 (14- ) which all saw increases of 4% in September. 

James Dower added: “Petrol hybrids values increased for the fourth month in a row with average values rising by 1.1%.  It's a growing market as we see more manufacturers releasing new models with hybrid powertrains and it appears that consumers have embraced the technology with few concerns over the life of a battery.”
